Loraine Kay Cabral

Loraine Kay Cabral holds a master’s degree in Molecular Medicine and is currently taking her doctorate degree at the Italian Liver Foundation (Fondazione Italiana Fegato).

Cancer genetics and epigenetics, karyotyping, biobanking, translational medicine, and molecular medicine are just some of the fields of interest of Loraine. “I wanted to become a clinician at first, but laboratory research has brought its unique charm to me”.

Having healthy and creative discussion and brainstorming with her mentors are some of the best mentorship experiences she had. Her mentors entertain and trust her ideas and guides her in troubleshooting should her ideas are starting to fail.

Loraine has been blessed with a lot of mentors throughout her scientific journey. She loves learning and teaching, as she believes interactions open people for learning. This prompted her to be one of SIDHI’s mentors. “I believe that the mission and advocacy of SIDHI in promoting a creative and conducive mentoring environment will be very pivotal in promoting excellence in producing Filipino scientists.”

For her future mentees, Loraine will be a collaborative type of mentor; encouraging thoughts and ideas from her mentees and directing them on how to maximize their potential and troubleshoot problems.

“Do everything with a reason to anchor to” – Loraine’s piece of advice to aspiring young Filipino Scientists. “Always find the big "why" you are doing things. So that when things go rough, you go back to why you are doing it in the first place.” As she emphasizes, it (Science) is not an easy ride. Make decisions according to your sense of purpose, passion, and perseverance. “At the end of the day, you create your journey to your dreams, always begin with a "start" button. It is very important why you want to start in the first place. This can guide you to the end of the road you build”.
