Jeanelyn Ramaneses

Jeanelyn is an alumna of Philippine Science High School – West Visayas Campus, and currently taking up Bachelor of Science in Materials Engineering at the University of the Philippines – Diliman.

Research interests? That would be metals and composites for Jeanelyn, who has also dealt with polymers. According to her, it took some time to appreciate materials engineering. However, this changed, and her interest grew as she was exposed in laboratory works explaining the importance of microstructures of materials.

She recalls a mentoring experience she had before wherein they organized a small lecture for several students on topics such as creating aesthetic presentations, basic public speaking etiquette, accurate analysis, and presentation of statistical data. Through this, she learned that research presentation skills are often overlooked and should be developed alongside academic writing skills when doing research.

Inspired by her High School teacher who graduate from Japan and came back to the Philippines to impart his knowledge and skills about research and its importance, Jeanelyn decided to be a SIDHI mentor. She has learned a lot from her teacher and wanted to share her knowledge to aspiring researchers.

As a mentor, she aspires to build good rapport with her mentees. She wanted them to feel comfortable with sharing insights and asking questions about their project. In addition, she will encourage them to be independent while remaining approachable when it comes to her students’ concerns.

“Research sounds like it's tedious and boring - you're right! It does seem like that sometimes but through research, you get to develop new skills and discover what interests you. Research can also take you to places, if you keep on persevering”, her words of advice for aspiring young Filipino Scientists.
