Carmela Caballero

Doc Carmela finished her degree in Medicine at the University of Santo Tomas – Faculty of Medicine and Surgery. She is also a General Surgeon trained at the Philippine General Hospital and Rizal Medical Center. Current, Doc Carmela serves as a Medical Advisor for Breast Cancer Research at Breast International Group. Her research interests and specialization includes breast cancer, general surgery, and patient advocacy in clinical cancer research.


What is your most exciting research and mentorship experience?

“In terms of breast cancer research, I am discovering the joy and enriching experience of discussing with patient advocates questions related to new ideas and impact of treatments in breast cancer. With regards to mentorship, I am glad to see the growth of SIDHI and the increasing number of young Filipinos who are interested in research.”


Why did you join SIDHI?

“It is my way of giving back to the Philippines even if I am physically far away from home.”


What piece of advice can you give to an aspiring young Filipino Scientist?

“Keep on asking questions. Keep on learning. Keep on moving forward. We are all scientists...”


What is your hope for the future of Science in the Philippines, and Science as a whole?

“My hope is that more young women and men will pursue STEM careers, not because of desire for financial security, but because of their passion for learning, discovering, and contributing to a better society. I hope that we will be even more inclusive, gender- sensitive, conscious of our impact to our planet... and courageous to stand up for the truth.”
